Liverpool player ratings

Alisson Becker 7/10

Prompted mild alarm with some of his distribution first half but two big stops to deny Jesus as City launched comeback after break.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7/10

Defended very well first half and kept Foden pretty quiet, even if it came at expense of regular forward forays. Still played part in third goal, though.

Ibrahima Konate 8/10

Thumped in yet another header from a corner and wasn’t intimidated by the City attack. Good strength at times and earned escape after one wayward pass out of defence second half.

Virgil van Dijk 6/10

Strangely lacked composure on a number of occasions and put Liverpool into needless trouble with some iffy passing out of defence. Not his best afternoon.

Andy Robertson 7/10

A bit hasty in the tackle at times but good energy down wing, particularly the longer the game progressed and swept in corner for opener. However, lost ball in build-up to City’s first and Mahrez got in behind for the second.

Fabinho 8/10

Helped shut down the City midfield before break and unlucky to be booked after a dive by Jesus. Excellent in protecting defence second half under increasing pressure

Thiago Alcantara 9/10

Set the tone from the first whistle by a superb range of passing, snappy in the tackle and chipped pass laid on Mane’s second. More considered and controlled second half. Outstanding.

Naby Keita 7/10

Started strongly and keen pressing led the way for his team-mates. Intelligent and swift possession in general. Booked and subbed.

Mohamed Salah 7/10

Given an awful lot to do by some ambitious passing from colleagues – often in the air – but dangerous whenever allowed to run at City defence. Almost capitalised on Zinchenko blunder second half.

Sadio Mane 9/10

Benefit of playing down the middle demonstrated by pressing Steffen into mistake for second goal, constantly pestered City and volleyed in superbly for the third. Booked for a bit of retribution on Fernandinho. Subbed.

Luis Diaz 8/10

Drew wows from Reds fans with one show of quick feet in midfield and gave Cancelo a consistently difficult time. So awkward for City to cope with. Subbed.

Jordan Henderson (for Keita 73) 6/10

Introduced to help lock down the midfield as City pressed forward.

Diogo Jota (for Mane 85) N/A

Roberto Firmino (for Diaz 85) N/A

Curtis Jones (for Thiago) N/A

Manchester city player ratings

Zack Steffen 3/10 Calamitous error to allow Mane to steal in and double Liverpool's lead in the first half. The type of mistake that is unforgivable at this level.

Joao Cancelo 4/10 Struggled against the quick feet of Diaz and was stifled offensively by Liverpool's intense press.

John Stones 5/10

Slow to move the ball from defence.

Nathan Ake 6/10

Didn't display the assurance with the ball which Laporte typically does, although he showed good recovery pace on a few ocassions.

Oleksandr Zinchenko 4/10

Didn't add much in possession, often struggling with his positioning on both sides of the ball.

Fernandinho 4/10 Took him until the 56th minute to finally draw a booking, which is remarkable considering the rate he was flying into challenges.

Bernardo Silva 5/10 Didn't display his qualities on the ball as much as he usually does. Wasn't afraid to snap in for a challenge as City chased shadows in the first half.

Phil Foden 5/10 His passing was decidedly off, switching between a midfield and wide left role.

Gabriel Jesus 7/10

His penetrative runs caused Liverpool issues in the second half and he ought to have done better with the pass from Grealish. Suits playing against Klopp's high defensive line.

Jack Grealish 6/10 Looked an awkward fit as part of the City frontline to start the game. Improved as the match wore on.

Raheem Sterling 5/10 Didn't have many opportunities to stretch his legs. Often forced to come infield in search of the ball.

Riyad Mahrez (82' for Jesus) 6/10 Left Robertson for dead to tee up Bernardo Silva in stoppage time.
