Cristiano Ronaldo, the Manchester United star, has reiterated that Portugal is in its "rightful place" after securing a place in the 2022 World Cup.

Portugal was desperate to prevent a repeat of Italy's upset defeat to North Macedonia last week, which saw the Italians miss out on a place in Qatar.

Portugal beat Turkey 3-1 on Thursday to set up a match against North Macedonia this evening, and Bruno Fernandes' brace ensured a 2-0 victory and a berth in the World Cup later this year.

"Goal scored! We're at the World Cup in Qatar, and we're in our rightful spot!" Ronaldo shared a photo on Instagram.

"Many thanks to all the Portuguese for their unwavering support!" "Go Portugal!" He went on to say,

Portugal has qualified for the World Cup for the sixth time in a row, and 37-year-old Ronaldo appears likely to play in the tournament for the fifth and possibly final time when it takes off in November.

Fernando Santos has previously led Portugal to victory in the Euro 2016 and 2019 Nations Leagues, and he will now look to add to his formidable prize collection in the World Cup.

"I've won two events already, and I'm hoping to win the third in Qatar."

"It was a well-deserved and fair victory and qualifying," said the team.

When the official World Cup draw is made on Friday, Portugal is expected to be among the top seeds.

While Ronaldo and Fernandes combined for the opening goal to lead their team to victory tonight, the latter stressed that ensuring the country qualified was the most crucial component.

"The most important thing," Fernandes added, "is that Portugal won."

Everyone, including Cristiano and myself, has ambition. Normally, he scores and I assist, but tonight it was the opposite. The most important thing to me is to assist the team-preferably with goals. Of all, whether it's the most crucial game or the least important game, we all want to score.

"I keep our coach's ideas in mind, and that's probably why I've scored this double, since I've done what the coach requested," he explained.
