Veteran Nigerian actor Kanayo O Kanayo has stirred conversations online following his recent comments about women in their 30s being a "prayer point" and a "state of emergency" if unmarried.

Speaking during an appearance on the Soni Irabor Live show on News Central, the acclaimed Nollywood star outlined his reasoning, citing lifestyle choices and missed opportunities in their younger years.

Kanayo shared his perspective, attributing the predicament to decisions made by women during their late teens and early 20s. According to him, many young women, often while in university, choose relationships with wealthy, sometimes older men, sidelining potential suitors within their age bracket.

The actor elaborated:

"A young girl will be in the university at 18, 19, 20. She starts dating a very rich guy—sometimes very old. Because the guy is rich, she refuses advances from younger men. This pattern continues until she’s in her mid-20s, enjoying the benefits like cars or houses, only to realize as she nears 30 that things are no longer the same."

Kanayo further highlighted the societal pressures that begin to mount as these women approach their late 20s and beyond. He described how such individuals, once living carefree, find themselves earnestly praying for a partner by their 30s.

"At 23, it’s a flex. At 28, she becomes a prayer point. By 33, she’s declared a state of emergency. Some even get to 35 still unmarried, while people think they’re having fun, but they’re not."

Kanayo also referenced a personal project, After 33, which delves deeper into this topic, adding a creative dimension to his opinions.

The actor’s comments have sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with some agreeing with his perspective and others labeling it as outdated and critical of women’s personal choices.
