Popular Nigerian actress, Mary Njoku has raised concerns about the relevance of Nollywood guilds and associations, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
She questioned the actual benefits of being a member and challenged them to provide proof.
Taking to her Instagram story, Njoku revealed that she often struggles to give a clear answer when upcoming filmmakers ask about the value of joining these associations.
She wrote:
"A budding filmmaker asked me, ‘What are the benefits of being part of Nollywood guilds and associations?’ and I am struggling to give a clear answer. Can someone help outline the benefits with supporting evidence?”
This comes after the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) confirmed that there are 22 officially recognized Nollywood guilds and associations, including AGN and the Theatre Arts and Motion Picture Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN).
Njoku’s statement has sparked conversations within the industry, with many questioning whether these bodies truly support their members.
