Former U.
S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his proposal to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to safer regions, such as Egypt or Jordan, to escape the ongoing violence. In a statement made on Monday, Trump confirmed that he would soon meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington to discuss the plan.
Trump’s comments come after a series of intense clashes between Israel and Hamas, which have devastated Gaza for over 15 months. Reflecting on the region's turmoil, Trump expressed a desire to help Palestinians find peace in areas free from continuous violence. "When you look at Gaza, it's been hell for many years," Trump said, emphasizing the need for a safe environment. He noted his upcoming meeting with Netanyahu, further exploring solutions for the crisis.
In recent discussions, Trump has also reached out to leaders of Jordan and Egypt, including King Abdullah II and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Both leaders have historically opposed the displacement of Palestinians but have been urged by Trump to consider the relocation.
Trump's plan comes as nearly all of Gaza's 2.4 million residents have been displaced following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. A ceasefire, currently in place, is expected to last six weeks, providing a temporary reprieve with the release of 33 hostages and about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. The peace process will continue in phases, aiming for the return of remaining hostages, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the repatriation of the deceased hostages' bodies.
While the Biden administration has developed post-conflict plans for Gaza, Trump has not yet referenced these proposals. His stance on the issue suggests a shift in approach to resolving the conflict and bringing long-term peace to the region.
