In a harrowing incident that unfolded over 11 days, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration of Abia State University (ABSU), Prof Godwin Emezue, has been released from captivity.

The abduction occurred on January 26, 2024, when Prof Godwin Emezue was forcibly taken from a fueling station in Umuahia North LGA, Abia State. His captors demanded a hefty ransom of 35 million from his family, initially threatening to end his life unless a payment of 5 million was made.

Despite the family's plea and payment of the initial 5 million, the kidnappers persisted, showcasing distressing footage of the professor being tortured. A chilling ultimatum was issued, with the threat of the professor's life unless an additional 20 million was paid before the looming Saturday deadline.

Responding to the dire situation, the traumatized family, backed by friends and the Abia State University community, mobilized resources to meet the escalating demands. The family handed over the cash to the kidnappers, who, in turn, cautioned against involving law enforcement agencies.

However, the ordeal took another distressing turn as the captors insisted on an extra 5 million, citing specific instructions to end the professor's life. The family, with the continued support of friends and the university, rallied once again to raise the additional funds, which were promptly sent to the kidnappers.

The release of Prof Godwin Emezue comes after enduring an agonizing period of uncertainty and fear for his life. As the community breathes a collective sigh of relief, questions surrounding the safety and security in the region continue to loom, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive measures to curb such incidents in the future.
