The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jam'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihd, has opened fire on a convoy transporting policemen attached to a yet-to-be-identified presidential aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
According to security officials, the rebels ambushed the convoy on the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road as it was traveling from Abuja to Maiduguri for a presidential campaign.
On Sunday, a tragedy occurred in Goni Matari village, Kaga Local Government Area, Borno State.
Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State; Rotimi Amaechi, the former minister of transportation; and Tein T.S. Jack-Rich, all APC presidential candidates, were in Borno over the weekend.
“The officers were from Abuja, not Borno command. They were attached to one of the presidential aspirants visiting Borno on Sunday, but I can’t confirm which of the aspirants was involved currently.
The insurgents also burnt two patrol vehicles they were travelling in. One of the policemen died on the spot, while the other died later at the hospital. Four others are currently hospitalized, "a police source told Naijacrawl."
Meanwhile, ISWAP has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group, however, said seven policemen were killed during the ambush.
Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISWAP, have been ferocious.
The Nigerian Army has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency has been largely defeated.
The terror group has caused over 100,000 deaths and displaced millions of individuals, mainly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.
