In a devastating incident on Saturday, January 4, 2025, suspected Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants unleashed a brutal assault on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Sabon Gari, located in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack resulted in an unconfirmed number of casualties among Nigerian soldiers, with many still reported missing.

According to security sources, the heavily armed insurgents stormed the base in the early hours, engaging the 25 Task Force Brigade in an intense firefight that lasted over two hours. Using advanced weaponry, the attackers destroyed multiple buildings, torched operational vehicles, and left the base in ruins.

"So far, we have recovered over seven bodies," a security source revealed to Sahara Reporters on Monday, noting that the ambush, which began around 4 a.m., overwhelmed the stationed personnel.

This brazen attack is part of an escalating wave of violence attributed to ISWAP, a faction that has grown significantly since the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau. Following Shekau’s demise, ISWAP absorbed hundreds of former Boko Haram fighters, consolidating its control around the Lake Chad region and expanding its reach across northeastern Nigeria.

Stay tuned for more updates on the fight against insurgency in Nigeria.
