A section of the bustling Abuja Market in Wuse was plunged into chaos on Tuesday when an enraged mob and aggrieved traders set it ablaze following an officer's alleged shooting of a convicted man.
According to reports gathered by PUNCH Online, the officer, who was attached to the Mobile Court within the market premises, reportedly fired his weapon at the man as he attempted to flee.
Confirming the incident, a reliable source within the Abuja Market Management Limited revealed to our correspondent that the market area had been sealed off by police personnel in a bid to restore order. Meanwhile, officers from the FCT Fire Service were actively working to extinguish the flames and prevent further damage.
Innocent Amaechina, the Public Relations Officer of AMML, lamented the extent of the damage caused by the fire, revealing that the management's office, numerous shops, and vehicles were consumed by the inferno.
Despite efforts to gather more information, the Director of the FCT Fire Service, Amiola Adebayo, remained unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
Similarly, SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command, expressed her commitment to gathering factual information about the incident and promised to provide updates as soon as possible.
