In a controversial move, the Cross River Government, under the leadership of Governor Bassey Otu, has demolished a historic monolith structure.
This decision has sparked significant attention as the site has now been replaced with a statue of Jesus Christ depicted as a shepherd leading his flock. Alongside this new statue, the flag of Israel has been prominently displayed on the staff.
The demolished monolith, part of the renowned Ikom monoliths, comprised a series of volcanic-stone structures believed to have been engraved by the Ejagham people around 200 CE. These ancient stones, standing between 0.3 and 1.8 meters (1 to 6 feet) high, are arranged in approximately 30 circles around Alok in the Ikom area of Cross River State. The Ikom monoliths are not only a significant part of the region's history but also a testament to the area's rich cultural heritage.
