The Police High Command has disclosed the arrest of a dismissed officer of the Nigerian Air Force, Ahmed Mohammed, for his involvement in supplying military camouflage and other equipment to bandits wreaking havoc in Zamfara State.
Revealing the details of the arrest, police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, explained that Ahmed Mohammed, who had served in the Air Force for a brief five years, was court-martialled by the military for an undisclosed offense. This former NAF personnel allegedly played a key role in introducing the illicit trade of military gear to Mushiri Abubakar, a notorious supplier to criminal gangs.
Adejobi disclosed that Ahmed Mohammed and Mushiri Abubakar had previously provided military camouflage to the infamous bandit Bello Turji and his gang, contributing to the terrorizing of Zamfara State.
Parading the suspects at the Special Tactical Squad-Intelligence Response Team headquarters in Abuja, Adejobi listed the seized items, including 10 sets of military camouflage uniforms, 10 camel packs, 2 military hats, 3 cardigans, 3 T-shirts, 2 belts, and 3 anklets. These items were intercepted during the transportation from Kaduna to Zamfara for the use of the bandits.
Adejobi emphasized that the police operation aimed at dismantling the criminal syndicate involved in supplying arms and ammunition to bandits. He stressed the significance of disrupting the supply chain, stating that the bandits' power was greatly diminished without access to sophisticated weapons.
The police spokesman outlined the commitment to dismantling the network responsible for providing weapons to intimidate innocent citizens. This arrest marks a critical step in addressing the root causes of the ongoing security challenges in Zamfara State and signals the determination of law enforcement to curb the illicit trade of military gear fueling criminal activities.
