The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu allegedly made a promise to secure Kanu’s release before the 2023 elections.

According to the family, this promise was tied to an agreement from IPOB not to disrupt or boycott the general elections, a move that they had the power to influence.

Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, shared these details in an exclusive interview with THISDAY on Thursday. He explained that before the elections, he received a message from an ex-governor, informing him that Seyi Tinubu, the son of the president, wanted to meet. Emmanuel agreed to the meeting, with the clear condition that the primary focus of their discussion would be the release of his brother.

The meeting took place in Abuja, with another individual present as a witness to ensure transparency and independent verification of the conversation, should it be necessary. This revelation has sparked fresh conversations around the commitment made by President Tinubu and its implications for both IPOB and the broader Nigerian political landscape.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
