Legendary Nigerian singer and politician Onyeka Onwenu reportedly passed away on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos.
Onwenu, affectionately known as "The Elegant Stallion," collapsed shortly after performing at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli.
An eyewitness at the event confirmed the heartbreaking news to TheNiche. "It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli's birthday today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it," the witness recounted.
Born on January 31, 1952, Onwenu was a prominent figure in Nigeria's music scene and a respected rights activist. She held notable positions, including chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development, appointed in 2013. Her legacy includes timeless songs like "Wait for Me," a duet with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official confirmation from her family. Onwenu's passing leaves a void in the hearts of many who admired her contributions to music and public service.
