Not fewer than 200 inmates have escaped from the Maiduguri New Prison in Borno State after a devastating flood caused by heavy rain destroyed part of the prison's perimeter wall.
An official from the Nigerian Correctional Center in Maiduguri confirmed the incident on Tuesday, revealing that several Boko Haram commanders were among those who managed to flee.
The flood, triggered by torrential rain, overwhelmed the city's infrastructure and severely affected the prison facility. According to the official, the collapse of the prison wall allowed more than 200 prisoners to escape. "Some Boko Haram commanders held in our facility have escaped with other prisoners," the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Despite the massive breakout, authorities were able to transfer another 200 inmates to a different facility to prevent further escapes.
