In the early hours of Tuesday, Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, was hit by severe flooding that left several parts of the city, including the Palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Garbai Elkenemi, submerged.

The flood, which also affected major areas such as Lagos Street, Modugari, Post Office, and Gwange, has displaced many residents and caused significant damage to properties.

According to reports, the Shehu of Borno was forced to vacate his palace and seek refuge at the Government House. “This is shocking! I have never witnessed this before. Even the Shehu has left his palace,” said a resident of Kofar Shehu, reflecting the unprecedented nature of the disaster.

Residents are scrambling to save their properties and protect their lives as the floodwaters continue to rise. Many, like Usman Babagana, a victim of the flood, revealed that there had been warnings about potential flooding. However, with no safe alternatives, they were left vulnerable. "We were told the flood was coming, but we had nowhere to go. I never expected it to be this bad," Usman shared.

For others like Buba Jibril, a pedestrian who got stranded around the Post Office area, the flood has been overwhelming. “This is the worst I have witnessed since my stay in Maiduguri. I hope this doesn’t lead to more hardship,” he lamented.
