No fewer than 1,500 employees of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) launched a protest on Thursday following their abrupt dismissal by the hospital management.

The workforce received notice on Wednesday instructing them to refrain from reporting to work, leaving them aggrieved, especially as they claimed to have toiled for months without receiving their salaries.

Originally employed by the teaching hospital's management in 2022, the Federal Government intervened, alleging job racketeering involving both the hospital management and some workers, resulting in the mass termination.

Expressing their discontent, the affected employees gathered at the hospital's main gate on Thursday, passionately chanting solidarity songs as a manifestation of their grievances. Their demand was clear: they urged the hospital management to reconsider its decision.

During the protest, the hospital's main gate remained closed, preventing workers from entering, and the ensuing disruption led to a halt in services.

As of now, the hospital management has not officially responded to the unfolding situation. Attempts to reach the spokesperson for comments proved futile, as she did not respond to several phone calls.

The sudden termination of such a large number of staff members has not only stirred unrest within the OAUTHC but also raises questions about the circumstances surrounding the alleged job racketeering. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds, shedding light on the grievances of the affected workers and the hospital management's stance on the matter.
