A coalition comprising over 10,000 indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and various civil society groups gathered at the National Assembly complex on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Nyesom Wike as the Minister of the capital city.
Organized under the banner of the Network of Civil Societies for Economic Sustainability, the protesters asserted that Wike's leadership in the FCT is marred by incompetence and a lack of vision.
The sheer size of the crowd marked an unprecedented event in the history of protests within the FCT, underscoring the intensity of dissatisfaction with Wike's tenure. In his address during the protest, the convener of the group, Adamu Kabir Matazu, did not mince words in describing the former Rivers State governor as callous, indecorous, uncouth, greedy, and selfish.
Matazu stated, "Today, we stand united to express our concern over the direction of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the watch of Nyesom Wike. It's abysmal and disturbing for the FCT to become an epicenter of controversy due to the misguided actions of Wike, which not only undermine President Tinubu's renewed hope agenda but also cast a shadow on the credibility of the federal government."
The coalition's primary demand was the immediate resignation or removal of Nyesom Wike from the position of Minister of the FCT, citing his alleged deficiency in the character required for the office and his disruptive impact on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Matazu continued, "Wike has remained a difficult person to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and should be gotten rid of. While the Federal Government has been calm and calculated in its reforms and its explanations to citizens on the rationale behind the policies of government, Wike has been insensitive; insulting the collective sensibilities of residents of the Federal Capital and Nigerians in general."
The group also raised concerns about Wike's alleged involvement in land grabbing and cronyism, suggesting that some land reforms may be aimed at dispossessing Nigerians of their properties. The tension in the FCT, described as the result of the "Wike is Coming" menace, was highlighted as a critical issue demanding urgent attention and resolution.
