Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the controversial Lagos-Calabar Highway project, labeling it as wasteful and corrupt.
Obasanjo, in his newly released book, Nigeria: Past and Future, questioned the rationale behind the N15.6 trillion project, claiming it reflects a pattern of financial recklessness in governance.
Obasanjo Condemns Wasteful Spending
The ex-president also took a swipe at the N21 billion official residence being built for the Vice President, describing it as an unnecessary expense during economic hardship.
"Everything is said to be transactional, and the slogan is ‘It is my turn to chop.’" Obasanjo wrote.
He further criticized the Tinubu-led administration for prioritizing projects that allegedly serve personal interests rather than the needs of Nigerians.
Presidency Yet to Respond
So far, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s presidential spokesperson, has not issued a response to Obasanjo’s latest remarks.
Public Backlash Over Lagos-Calabar Highway
The Lagos-Calabar Highway project, launched in March 2024, has faced widespread criticism. Opposition leader and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, also condemned the project, urging its suspension.
Despite the backlash, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has repeatedly defended the initiative, insisting that 30 km out of the 70 km Phase 1, Section 1 will be completed by May 2025.
Government Defends the Project
Despite mounting opposition, Tinubu’s administration maintains that the highway will boost economic development and infrastructure in Nigeria.
However, critics argue that the massive budget could be better spent on pressing national issues such as education, healthcare, and security.
