The Nigerian Senate has officially responded to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), stating that the suspension of Kogi lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, was due to gross misconduct and not related to her sexual harassment allegation against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
This clarification follows the controversy surrounding Natasha’s complaint at the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Conference in New York, which has continued to attract widespread reactions.
Senate Responds to IPU on Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Complaint
After Senator Natasha took her case to the global institution, seeking intervention over what she described as an injustice, the IPU assured her that it would investigate the matter by hearing from both sides.
However, the Nigerian Senate has now formally addressed the issue through a letter sent by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. The letter, read by Honorable Kafilat Ogbara, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, refuted claims that Natasha’s suspension was linked to her allegations against Akpabio.
“Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for gross misconduct and unruly behavior, not due to allegations of sexual harassment or assault,” the letter stated.
“The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria firmly refutes the deliberate misinformation and false narrative being circulated by certain media organizations regarding the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Let it be unequivocally stated that she was suspended solely for her persistent acts of misconduct and disregard for the Senate Standing Orders.”
Despite the Senate’s position, Honorable Ogbara called for a thorough investigation into the sexual harassment claims against Akpabio.
Senator Natasha’s Suspension Sparks National Debate
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension last week has ignited intense debates across Nigeria. She had initially submitted a petition accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment, but the Senate dismissed it before proceeding with her suspension. Even after filing another petition, the lawmakers upheld their decision.
In response, Natasha vowed to continue her fight against injustice, stating that she would not be silenced. Meanwhile, Senate President Akpabio has strongly denied the accusations, asserting that he has never engaged in any form of harassment.
Long-Standing Tensions Between Akpabio and Natasha
The rift between Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan reportedly dates back to previous altercations. Their latest clash occurred on February 20, 2025, after Natasha’s seat was reassigned during plenary, sparking controversy.
Additionally, in July 2024, Akpabio allegedly reprimanded Natasha for misconduct, advising her to follow Senate rules. He controversially stated that the Senate “was not a nightclub where anybody can talk anyhow.” Following public backlash, he later apologized for the remark.
What’s Next?
As the situation unfolds, many Nigerians are closely watching to see if the IPU’s intervention will yield any results. Meanwhile, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan remains resolute in challenging what she perceives as injustice, while the Senate insists its decision was purely disciplinary.
