The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a 21-year-old final-year student of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, Ondo State.
The suspect, identified as Olubodun Sanni, stands accused of the brutal murder of 20-year-old Ifeoluwa Adekunle, a fellow student at the university.
Ifeoluwa, a 300-level student in the Department of Economics, met her untimely demise when she was fatally stabbed in her off-campus apartment. The tragic incident unfolded in the quiet halls of the university, sending shockwaves through the community.
Sanni, a student of the geology department, shared the same off-campus hostel with Ifeoluwa. Disturbingly, he confessed to the crime, revealing that he committed the heinous act out of attraction to the victim's iPhone. In a chilling account, Sanni disclosed the details of how he gained access to Ifeoluwa's room, ruthlessly stabbed her in the chest with a knife, and callously stole her iPhone XR.
The arrest and subsequent confession were announced by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Oladipo, during a press conference held at the police headquarters in Akure on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. The CP revealed that modern technology played a crucial role in tracking down the stolen phone to the suspect.
"On February 2, 2024, a case of suspected murder was reported to the police, detailing the tragic discovery of Adekunle Ifeoluwa in her off-campus hostel," stated CP Oladipo. "The police, through the use of modern technology, traced the missing phone to Olubodun Sanni, a final-year student and neighbor to the deceased in the hostel."
As the investigation unfolds, the recovered phone serves as a pivotal piece of evidence, linking Sanni to the crime. CP Oladipo affirmed that the suspect will face charges in court at the conclusion of the investigation, highlighting the gravity of the crime that has rocked the Ondo State university community.
