In the Orokpor community of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State, a 32-year-old man named Ernest Okemute has been apprehended by authorities for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend named Precious Ekarume.
The news broke through a Facebook post shared by Nigerian activist Kelvin Ejumudo on Sunday, April 21, 2024. According to Ejumudo, Okemute is accused of subjecting Ekarume to physical violence, wielding both belt and stick, purportedly because she refused to terminate her pregnancy as he demanded.
Ejumudo's post highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that violence against women is unequivocally condemned. He recounted how Ekarume, despite being in a vulnerable position, bravely sought help through community leaders and ultimately connected with him.
Ejumudo noted that Okemute allegedly boasted that he would face no consequences even if he were to cause her harm or worse. The victim's plight drew immediate attention, leading to collaborative efforts between Ejumudo and the Area Commander of the Ughelli Nigeria Police Force, ACP Ademola Adebayo, who swiftly dispatched officers to apprehend the suspect.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of gender-based violence and the urgent need for societal intervention to protect vulnerable individuals. It underscores the importance of community solidarity and law enforcement cooperation in holding perpetrators of such heinous acts accountable.
