In a recent operation in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, the police successfully neutralized a suspected bandit attempting to pick up a demanded N3 million ransom from a local businessman.
The state's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, shared details of the incident on Thursday, highlighting the recovery of the suspect's AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine.
According to Abiodun, the police received information that four suspected kidnappers had threatened to abduct a businessman in Bako-Mission village, Pissa District of Borgu LGA, unless he deposited N3 million within three days at a specified location near Tunga-Umoru village, via Pissa District.
Upon receiving this information, the police tactical team, in collaboration with vigilante members led by the DPO New-Bussa Div, swiftly responded. They mobilized to the designated location, implemented operational strategies, and engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle.
During the operation, one female victim, previously kidnapped and approximately 22 years old, was successfully rescued unharmed. The police team combed the surrounding area, resulting in the neutralization of one of the bandits during the gun battle. His AK-47 rifle, along with an empty magazine, was recovered.
Despite other members of the gang fleeing the scene with gunshot injuries, a concerted effort is underway to apprehend the escaping suspects. The successful operation has restored public confidence in the area, and stability has been reinstated.
This incident underscores the dedication and efficiency of the police force in Niger State in responding to and neutralizing criminal threats, ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining law and order.
