In a disturbing turn of events, the Jigawa State Police have apprehended a 32-year-old man, Samuel Shegun, in connection with the alleged murder of his own biological mother.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, revealed this information during a press conference held at the command’s headquarters in Dutse, the state capital.

The arrest comes in the wake of the discovery of the lifeless body of 47-year-old Esther Adekanla, known as Hadiza Nakowa, in her residence in Dutse town. The police, through an investigation conducted by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, linked Samuel Shegun, residing opposite Awajil Filling Station Dutse, to the brutal killing of his mother and the injuring of his sister.

The breakthrough in the case came through the tracking of the deceased's phone number, which implicated the suspect in the crime. CP Abdullahi provided details about the suspect's account during the interrogation.

“On 12/02/2024 at about 2200hrs, the suspect disclosed that his mother returned from where she sells food and engaged in a heated altercation with a young girl, Christiana Michael. The argument escalated to the point where his mother, armed with a knife, posed a threat to the young girl. In an attempt to rescue his sister, Shegun intervened, leading to a struggle during which his mother accidentally cut herself on the neck with the knife."

Realizing the severity of the situation and not wanting to attract attention from law enforcement, Shegun admitted to stealing his mother's phones, locking the house, and distancing himself from the area.

CP Abdullahi confirmed that the injured sister, Christiana Michael, is currently under medical care and is responding to treatment. The young girl corroborated the suspect's involvement in the crime during police questioning.

The 32-year-old suspect is slated to face legal proceedings as he will be charged to court for prosecution. The shocking incident underscores the need for a thorough investigation into domestic disputes and the importance of addressing mental health concerns within communities.
