Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has told Liverpool that they must make one signing this January transfer window in order for them to finish in the Premier League's top four this season.

According to Carragher, Liverpool must sign a Georginio Wijnaldum-type midfielder who, alongside Fabhino, can protect their back four and stop the players from running through.

The former defender spoke after Liverpool's 3-1 Premier League defeat to Brentford on Monday night.

“They have gone from a team challenging for four trophies to one that is struggling for a Champions League place." "Liverpool didn’t sign a midfield player in the summer,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“They can’t get in the top four without signing a midfielder." I can’t see it changing before the end of the season.

“They need a Georginio [Wijnaldum] type midfielder, who alongside Fabhino can protect that back four and stop the players running through,” he added.

Liverpool are currently in sixth place on the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will face Brighton in their next Premier League tie on Saturday, January 14.
