Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has heaped praise on Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch, hailing the Dutchman as one of the most underrated players in the game.

Mikel, a Nigerian football legend, believes Gravenberch doesn’t get the recognition he truly deserves despite his stellar performances this season. The 22-year-old midfielder has thrived under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, excelling in a deeper role as a number six.

Gravenberch endured a challenging debut season under former manager Jurgen Klopp, but Slot’s tactical tweak has unleashed his full potential. His defensive contributions, combined with his ability to drive forward with the ball, have made him a key figure for The Reds this season.

Mikel Compares Gravenberch to Rodri

Speaking on his podcast, Obi Mikel expressed admiration for Gravenberch, comparing him to Manchester City’s midfield maestro, Rodri.

"Because I played in that position, when I see a player excelling in the role, I become a huge fan. Gravenberch is not just a defensive powerhouse, but also a driving force going forward. He breaks up play, pushes the team forward, and has been absolutely fantastic."

Mikel also pointed out that defensive midfielders often go unnoticed, despite their crucial contributions.

Liverpool Turned to Gravenberch After Failed Zubimendi Move

Liverpool had initially targeted Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi in the transfer window, but the Spaniard rejected a move to the Premier League. This forced Slot to place his trust in Gravenberch, a decision that has paid off handsomely.

With his impressive form and growing influence in Liverpool’s midfield, Gravenberch is proving why he deserves more recognition—not just from fans, but from the football world as a whole.
