Nemanja Matic, a former Manchester United midfielder, has expressed sympathy for England captain Harry Maguire and called what is being done to the center-back a "disaster.
"
Matic, who is currently an AS Roma player, insisted that Maguire is being harassed on social media by people "who don't have their own lives."
Maguire was called up by England coach Gareth Southgate and played in the Three Lions' UEFA Nations League 1-0 loss to Italy last Friday. Under Man United manager Erik ten Hag this season, Maguire has lost his position in defense.
Maguire was booed by some England supporters, and some of them later harassed him online.
However, Matic has now hit out at the perpetrators, having previously spent three seasons at Old Trafford with Maguire.
“What people are doing to him [Maguire], it is a disaster,” Matic told The Times.
“Everything has to have limits, and some of these people writing on social media don’t have their own lives, so they just have to write bad things about someone else.”
