The Nigeria Professional Football League's clubs are advocating for a league that is less competitive in 2022–2023.
The clubs' proposal was motivated by a combination of time restraints and the desire to maintain a consistent schedule with the European leagues.
When the Interim Management Committee (IMC) is established by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the proposal for the condensed league will be sent to the IMC.
After Nigeria's sports ministry ruled the League Management Committee (LMC) to be unconstitutional, the IMC was given the task of managing the NPFL.
The league will be split into two groups of 10 teams each, per the proposal made by the club owners.
The league champions will be determined by a Super Four tournament between the top two teams from each group.
After overcoming a strong challenge from Plateau United, Rivers United won the NPFL championship the previous season.
