A contract worth $1 million per week was rejected by Victor Osimhen.

The Super Eagles striker was the subject of an offer from Al Hilal to Napoli worth €140 million, with weekly wages estimated to be around £1 million.

Osimhen replied "no."

Instead, the current Serie A leading scorer is negotiating a contract extension with the league champions.

The 24-year-old is anticipated to agree to a new two-year contract with Napoli that will run through 2027 and include a €150 million release clause.

On social media, there was a lot of discussion about Osimhen's decision to pass up a significant move to the Middle East, especially among Nigerian football fans.

One camp believed the player ought to have returned to Europe while still in the prime of his career and signed perhaps a three-year contract with Al Hilal.

The opposing side countered that Osimhen just gatecrashed the big time and that he cannot just up and leave for Saudi Arabia at this time when his stock is only beginning to rise.

“I have two perspectives – the sentimental and the ambitious perspective,” Yubby Ndunofit, the co-producer and host of The Hindsight Podcast, tells DAILY POST.
“I personally believe African players cannot even for a second start to behave or think like European players.
“Osimhen comes from Africa, and as a result, the shinny European Champions League (which is effectively his only reason to remain in Europe) shouldn’t be as much of a factor in his decision-making.
“The opportunity to become probably Africa’s highest-paid athlete of all time ought to have been a straight decision.
“With less than £150,000 per week at Liverpool have you seen what Mane has been doing in his community in Senegal?
“Granted, Osimehn has made more money than he will ever need. But when you get to a certain stage, you start thinking about community.”
