Jesse Lingard, a Manchester United midfielder, has been told that staying at Old Trafford this season would be a step backwards for him.
Lingard was once again relegated to the bench for what could have been his final game at Old Trafford, against Brentford, on Monday night.
Manchester United honored Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic, who are both due to leave the club this summer, by giving them minutes in the 3-0 victory at Old Trafford.
Lingard, on the other hand, sat on the bench for the entire game.
Charlie Austin, a former Burnley and Queen Park Rangers midfielder, believes that remaining at Old Trafford would be a step backwards for the England international.
“Staying at Man United, Jesse Lingard has taken two steps back.
“His stock was so high [at West Ham], but it’s not worked out this year,” he told talkSPORT.
