Nathan Broadhead, an Everton striker, has completed a season-long loan move to Championship rivals Wigan Athletic, meaning Sunderland has lost the race to re-sign him.
The 24-year-old will complete the remainder of his contract on Merseyside by playing at the DW Stadium during the upcoming season. Last season, he scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for the Black Cats. According to reports, he may have received a new contract from Frank Lampard's team.
With the addition of Ellis Simms, who scored two goals in his first start for Sunderland at the weekend in their 3-2 win over Bristol City, losing the race to sign Broadhead won’t be as much of a blow to the Black Cats. However, Sunderland were keen to sign him earlier in the summer after engaging in talks with Everton, and manager Alex Neil wanted reinforcements before the closure of the transfer window.
