Former Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games gold medallist and President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), Tijani Babangida, faced a devastating blow on Thursday when a car accident resulted in the loss of his younger brother, Ibrahim Babangida.
The tragic incident was announced by Emmanuel Babayaro, the General Secretary of PFAN, in a statement. While the details surrounding the accident remained unclear, reports indicate that it occurred along the Kaduna-Zaria Road.
In a heartfelt plea for support, Babayaro urged everyone to keep Tijani Babangida and his family in their prayers during this difficult time. He revealed that Ibrahim Babangida tragically lost his life in the accident, while Tijani and his family were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Upon confirmation of the incident, Babayaro provided further details, confirming that the accident took place as they were traveling from Kaduna to Zaria. He disclosed that Tijani's wife was also involved in the accident but thankfully, Tijani himself is conscious and currently receiving treatment at Shika Hospital in Zaria.
The late Ibrahim, aged 47, was a retired footballer and a member of the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning Golden Eagles squad in Japan. He had an illustrious career, playing for local sides such as Bank of The North, Stationery Stores, and Katsina United before venturing overseas to join Dutch side Volendam in 1997.
