After his remarks following their 1-0 Europa League victory over Real Sociedad on Thursday, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has come under fire from Chelsea legend Chris Sutton.
Ten Hag observed as Real Sociedad was defeated by Manchester United in Spain in the first half thanks to Alejandro Garnacho's goal.
However, Man United needed to defeat the hosts by at least three goals if they were to win Group E. Their victory over the LaLiga team was not enough for them to do so.
Ten Hag's team will play a club that has been eliminated from the Champions League in the preliminary round after placing second in Group E.
Ten Hag insisted after the game that his team deserved more from the game during the post-game press conference, but Sutton did not take his comments too kindly.
“With what was at stake in this game, I think it was a surprise, more than that when they took the lead in the second half, it was not like they peppered the goal,” Sutton told BT Sport.
“I am a bit baffled by Ten Hag saying “you don’t always get what you deserve." I don’t think they deserved to win the game by more than one; I actually don’t think they deserved to win the game. It was a pretty even game. With what was at stake, they had to play them with greater desperation toward the end.
“It was never going to be easy for Ten Hag, but they put themselves under unnecessary pressure." "They should’ve been ruthless with this group; at the start of the campaign, you would have thought that United would finish top, and they’re now second and have a problem.”
