Tragedy struck the city of Magdeburg, Germany, on Friday evening when an SUV plowed through a crowded Christmas market, leaving devastation in its wake.
Authorities confirmed that the high-speed rampage killed at least two people, including a young child, and injured 68 others.
The suspect, identified as a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian medical doctor residing in Saxony-Anhalt since 2006, was apprehended at the scene. Regional premier Reiner Haseloff described the attack as a "catastrophe" for the city and the country.
"We have arrested the perpetrator," Haseloff announced to reporters, adding that current evidence points to the attacker acting alone, with no further danger to the public. German media partially named the suspect as Taleb A., a psychiatrist by profession.
The black BMW used in the attack sped through the bustling market just after 7:00 PM local time (1800 GMT), mowing down revelers for over 400 meters in the city’s central town hall square.
Disturbing video footage captured the moment police apprehended the suspect. Officers, with weapons drawn, shouted commands to the bearded man wearing glasses, who was lying next to the wrecked vehicle.
Emergency services, including ambulances and fire engines, quickly descended on the scene. The once festive market square was overtaken by chaos, with bloodied victims, shattered glass, and debris scattered across the area. First responders worked tirelessly to stabilize the injured and transport them to hospitals.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack. Meanwhile, the incident has left Germany mourning another violent event during what should have been a season of joy and celebration.
