The ongoing feud between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over sexual harassment allegations has taken a dramatic twist.

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, several women’s groups under the Nigerian Women Crusade for Good Governance (NWCGG) publicly apologized to the Senate over the controversy.

Women’s Groups Condemn Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Actions

At a press briefing in Abuja, the leader of NWCGG, Cecilia Ikechukwu, expressed deep embarrassment over the saga, stating that it undermines the hard-earned respect female politicians have fought for in Nigeria. The group criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for allegedly having a history of accusing men in authority of sexual harassment and praised Akpabio for his commitment to women’s inclusion in governance.

“Our apology is to the Senate and to the entire nation. This incident has been a setback for female politicians striving to build credibility and trust. We must not allow one individual’s actions to define the progress women have made in Nigerian politics,” Ikechukwu stated.

Akpoti-Uduaghan Advised to Learn Senate Rules During Suspension

Following her suspension from the Senate on March 6, 2025, for violating institutional rules, the NWCGG advised Akpoti-Uduaghan to use the six-month suspension period to familiarize herself with legislative processes.

“She must take this time to study and understand Senate rules. Upon her return, she should uphold the dignity and respect required of her office,” the group stated.

Women’s Groups Reaffirm Commitment to Good Governance

Despite the controversy, NWCGG emphasized that Nigerian women in politics remain committed to leadership, integrity, and progress.

“This incident must not overshadow the remarkable achievements of countless women who have served with distinction. Women in public office must understand that their positions come with a duty to inspire, not embarrass. Nigerians must remain steadfast in their support for good governance and accountability,” the statement read.

Akpoti-Uduaghan Rejects Suspension, Heads to Court

Meanwhile, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has outrightly rejected her suspension, calling it an injustice that cannot stand. She has taken legal action, filing a lawsuit to restrain the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her. The case has been adjourned to March 25, 2025.

Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding political drama.
