Rotimi, the Nigerian-American singer and actor, asserts that he pioneered Afrobeats in the United States, sparking debate online.

In a recent episode of the 85 South Show Podcast, Rotimi claimed to have introduced Afrobeats-style music to the US before the global 'Afrobeats to the World' movement gained traction.

He reminisced about facing resistance when promoting his single 'Love Riddim' in 2018 due to its Afrobeats influences, noting that it was not well-received by radio stations at the time.

However, his assertion has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many pointing out earlier instances of Afrobeats gaining attention in the US. They highlight tracks such as Ayo Jay's 'Your Number' (2015), Drake and Wizkid's collaboration 'One Dance' (2016), and Davido's hits 'Fall' and 'If' (2017) as examples that predate Rotimi's 'Love Riddim.'

Rotimi's claims and the ensuing discussions showcase the evolving landscape of Afrobeats' influence and reception in the American music scene.
