Martins Otse, a social media activist and blogger known as VeryDarkMan, appeared at the Lagos High Court in response to a defamation lawsuit filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana.
The lawsuit stemmed from remarks Otse allegedly made in a video purportedly involving Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky), implicating Falana in an attempt to secure amnesty for Bobrisky during custody.
Falana's law firm had demanded a retraction and subsequently filed a libel suit when the allegation garnered significant public attention. Justice Dawodu, presiding over the ex parte application, ordered Otse and his associates to remove any defamatory content posted on September 24, 2024, from all social media platforms and barred further publication of such material.
The court emphasized Falana's right to protection from defamation, citing substantial evidence supporting potential harm from the defendant's actions. Justice Dawodu stated that damages might not sufficiently compensate for any harm, especially if Otse was not financially equipped to do so if Falana's case prevailed. The judge granted Falana leave to serve court documents to Otse through his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, at a specified address in Abuja.
The ruling ensures that Otse and his associates comply with removing and refraining from disseminating any defamatory content against Falana until further proceedings.
