The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has implemented a nationwide ban on the use of Point of Sale (POS) machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities.

The ban, announced by police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement on Monday, comes in response to public concerns about alleged illegal transactions involving POS operators and collaboration with certain police personnel.

Adejobi emphasized that the prohibition aims to address the "public outcry on alleged illegal and illicit transactions through POS machine operators and connivance with certain police operatives." The move is designed to prevent perceived corrupt practices and uphold discipline within the police force.

The statement reads, "The ban is aimed at preserving the integrity and security of police operations, forestalling perceived corrupt practices, as well as clearing the Commands/Formations of possible criminal intrusion under such guise, and maintaining discipline within the Force."

Adejobi warned that any attempts to defy the directive would result in severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected commands and formations. All police officers are expected to comply with the ban, and those found violating the order will face appropriate disciplinary measures.

Despite previous directives, the police force observed continued violations of the regulation in some commands and formations. The IGP stressed the significant risks associated with the use of electronic payment devices within police facilities, including the compromise of sensitive information, financial irregularities, and facilitation of illicit activities.

The directive emphasizes the non-negotiable need for strict adherence to the ban. The IGP urged all officers and personnel to comply without exception, cautioning that any police officer or POS operator found contravening the order would face disciplinary and criminal actions in accordance with existing laws and regulations. Additionally, the leadership of the Command/Formation will be held responsible for any non-compliance within their jurisdictions.
