Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 Ogun State elections, has shed light on the reasons behind his loss to Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement made on Thursday, Adebutu attributed his defeat to the alleged activities of hoodlums purportedly sponsored by the ruling party. He emphasized that he chose not to retaliate with violence, a decision that, according to him, allowed the perpetrators to get away with their actions.

Adebutu made these remarks during the 92nd-anniversary remembrance event of his great-grandfather, Pa Alimi Adebutu, held in Ijeun-Akoni, a remote community in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State. Pa Adebutu, a revered figure in the community, was eulogized for his contributions to its development.

Addressing reporters after a prayer session, Adebutu expressed his belief in life after death and his commitment to avoiding politics driven by desperation and violence.

"I believe in life after death, that is me. That is why you will see in the kind of politics that I play. You will never see violence, you will never see desperation," he asserted.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the elections, Adebutu highlighted the destruction of 99 polling booths, attributing it to his refusal to endorse retaliation. He reiterated his stance against bloodshed, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and civility in political engagements.

Despite allegations from the APC spokesperson in the state, Tunde Oldunjoye, suggesting post-election campaigning by Adebutu, the former governorship candidate remained steadfast in his commitment to principled politics and non-violence. He emphasized the enduring legacy of his great-grandfather, underscoring the significance of integrity and community service.

"It’s good to be good. After 92 years, these people have not forgotten him. They spoke glowingly of him. When you do well, your legacy lingers," Adebutu remarked, echoing the enduring impact of altruism and virtuous conduct in society.
