Abia State Government has reported a single case of Monkeypox in the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made this announcement during the state’s executive council meeting on Monday. He indicated that there were 13 suspected cases, with one confirmed positive, nine negative, and three still pending certification, but fortunately, there have been no fatalities yet. The incident occurred in Isialangwa, and the state has established centers, including Abia State University Teaching Hospital, with plans to open more centers in the near future.

The Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Ngozi Azodo, highlighted the collaboration between the Ministries of Health, Environment, and Public Utilities. She mentioned the formation of a steering committee on infectious diseases and emphasized the state's alignment with the Federal Government's "One-Health" policy. Dr. Azodo stressed the government's commitment to enhancing these facilities and sustaining heightened surveillance. She urged citizens to uphold good hygiene, limit contact with animals, and avoid individuals displaying symptoms of the disease.

Additionally, Dr. Azodo revealed that the state Ministry of Health intends to refurbish and upgrade 200 Primary Healthcare Centres within 100 days. She described this initiative as a significant undertaking, with renovations commencing in the first week of September and deliveries scheduled to begin in December as a special "Christmas gift" to Abians.
