In a somber turn of events, the news of the demise of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has surfaced.
A family source revealed on Wednesday that Akeredolu passed away in Lagos. The governor, who was 67 years old, had been undergoing medical care in Lagos and was reportedly managed by State House doctors until his untimely death.
According to information gathered, Akeredolu's health condition prevented him from being flown abroad for medical treatment. Sources mentioned that efforts were made to locate dialysis machines for him at a secret location in Lagos in the preceding week.
The late governor's health struggles were not new. He returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany. More recently, he had taken another medical leave, as directed by President Bola Tinubu, during which he handed over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Aiyedatiwa has been acting as the governor in his absence.
Following his return in September, Akeredolu faced public criticism for attempting to govern the state from Ibadan, Oyo State, rather than Ondo, prompting public outrage.
The health challenges faced by the governor led to the suspension of celebratory activities planned for his wife Betty's 70th birthday. Betty Akeredolu, in a series of tweets, conveyed the suspension and assured well-wishers that the celebration would take place upon her return.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters had disclosed that Akeredolu was battling leukemia, a type of cancer affecting blood-forming tissues. Leukemia results in the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells, hindering the body's ability to fight infections. The treatment for leukemia is complex and varies depending on the type and other factors.
As the state mourns the loss of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, reflections on his tenure and contributions to Ondo State will undoubtedly follow in the days to come.
