George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has stated that God could make former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s president even at the age of 90.

In a recent interview with TVC, Akume advised northern political leaders to reconsider running against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, emphasizing that the South should retain the presidency in the next electoral cycle.

Akume said, “If it is the will of God for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to be President of Nigeria, even at the age of 90, it can happen. However, he and other northerners seeking the presidency should look beyond 2027.”

The former Benue State governor also defended Tinubu’s administration, stating that the president still enjoys widespread support despite the introduction of tax reform bills and other economic policies. Akume urged Nigerians to allow the proposed reforms to pass through the necessary legislative processes, describing them as crucial for the nation’s progress.

He added, “These reforms are well thought out and are designed to benefit Nigeria and Nigerians.”

Atiku, who finished second to Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, has contested for the presidency multiple times without success. However, his intentions for the 2027 election remain unclear.

Segun Sowunmi, one of Atiku’s close aides, commented on the speculation, stating, “Atiku has not explicitly declared his intention to run in 2027. I’ve asked him twice, months apart, and he hasn’t confirmed.”

While Atiku’s political future remains uncertain, Akume’s remarks have reignited discussions about leadership rotation and the prospects for northern politicians in the 2027 elections.
