In a devastating incident at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, two students lost their lives after reportedly inhaling fumes from a generator.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed this unfortunate event.

The victims have been identified as 20-year-old Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo and Ibrahim Haliru. According to SP Aya, the tragedy unfolded as a generator set, positioned near the window of the victims' room, emitted fumes while they were sleeping.

The lifeless bodies of Bilikisu Tijani Eleojo and Ibrahim Haliru were discovered by neighbors in the early hours of the day. A third student, Mercy Ojochegbe, who was also present in the room, was found breathing and promptly rushed to the hospital.

Explaining the circumstances, SP Aya stated, “When they slept inside their room, a generator was switched on close to the window of their apartment. They all slept off and inhaled carbon monoxide as a result of the generator set that was on."

The tragic incident was reported at the B division of the Nigeria Police Force, Lokoja, and investigations are currently underway.

SP Aya used the opportunity to caution residents about the importance of safety awareness to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes. This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with improper generator use, emphasizing the need for vigilance and precaution to avert such tragedies in the future.
