In a disturbing incident that unfolded on Saturday, suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched an attack on the convoy of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road.

The attack occurred after the governor had attended the 24th convocation of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State.

According to an eyewitness who was part of the entourage and spoke with Channels TV, the assailants ambushed the convoy between Beneshiekh and Mainok, covering a distance of less than sixty kilometers to Damaturu. The attackers strategically fired upon the convoy from both sides of the highway, with a particular focus on the lead vehicle.

"We narrowly escaped death today. The convoy was attacked between Beneshiekh and Mainok, a distance of less than sixty kilometres to Damaturu after attending the 24th convocation of the University of Maiduguri," the eyewitness revealed.

Tragically, the ambush resulted in the death of two policemen, one killed instantly, and the other succumbing to injuries sustained from bullet wounds. The eyewitness provided a harrowing account, stating, "As a matter of fact, we left Maiduguri late, around 6.00 pm."

Governor Buni was not present in the convoy during the attack, as he had reportedly traveled to Abuja for an official function. This incident marks the first time the Yobe State governor's convoy has been targeted since the onset of the Boko Haram insurgency twelve years ago.

The security situation in the region remains a significant concern, and this brazen attack on a governor's convoy underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating insurgency. As investigations unfold, questions arise about the broader implications for security measures and the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety of citizens in the region.
