Chelsea turn round the score to beat Newcastle 3-1 thanks to two goals from Eden Hazard and a header from Alvaro Morata.
Despite sitting third in the Premier League, Chelsea’s title defence is shaping up to be unsuccessful as they trail in-form and unbeaten leaders Manchester City by 11 points, leaving Antonio Conte’s side to focus on the top-four.
Newcastle showed their resilience, battling back from 2-0 down to earn a draw at the West Brom in midweek, halting a four-match losing skid that saw them drop into the bottom half of the table
. GOALS: 12' GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle (Dwight Gayle) 21' GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (Eden Hazard) 33' GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle (Alvaro Morata) 74' GOAL! Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle (Eden Hazard PENALTY) MATCH EVENTS: 5' Some good pressing off the ball is seeing Chelsea win it back quickly after losing it, and it leads to their first chance as Drinkwater threads a ball across the face of goal, but Newcastle deal with it. 12' GOAL! Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle (Dwight Gayle) Courtois is a second late arriving at a loose ball in the box, which Murphy manages to keep alive, and Gayle pounces to turn it into the gaping net! It's a great start for the Magpies! 17' Magnificent save by Karl Darlow to deny Hazard! Hazard traps a ball over the top and looks to nudge it beyond the goalkeeper but he stands up well to keep the ball out. 21' GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (Eden Hazard) It was certainly coming! Moments after Christensen came close with a header, Hazard pounces on a week clearance attempt from Lejeune off a ball in from Fabregas, intended for Morata, and the Belgium international finishes confidently at the near post! 33' GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle (Alvaro Morata) FROM BEHIND, CHELSEA LEAD! It took them all of 20 minutes to complete the turnaround! A dreadful defensive header from Ritchie gifts the ball to Moses on the flank, and he punishes a cross in for Morata, who bravely gets his head to the cross and turn it to give Chelsea the lead! 48' CLOSE! Chelsea attack swiftly and confidently to start the second half, with both Moses and Hazard providing inviting deliveries across the face of goal for Morata. 61' Not a bad effort by any means from Merino, who teases a strike just wide of the far post from 25 yards. You can hardly fault him for trying, and not trying to play Perez through, as the visitors need to get more balls the way of Courtois. 74' GOAL! Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle (Eden Hazard PENALTY) PENALTY TO CHELSEA! Excellent weight behind that ball from Fabregas to play Moses through into the area, who is tripped up by a poorly timed slide from Ritchie, and the referee points directly to the spot. A Panenka penalty from Hazard has Darlow completely fooled, and alas Chelsea have wrapped up the points here!
