Kylian Mbappe chose to represent France, his own country of birth, even though he was qualified to represent Cameroon, the nation of his father's ancestry.

The Paris Saint-Germain player chose to represent Europe even though he was born in Paris to an Algerian mother and a Cameroonian father.

His father Wilfried once revealed that although he had wanted his son to represent the country of Central Africa, a representative had demanded money.

The French national team then called Mbappe up in 2017 to their squad. He contributed to the team that triumphed in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in France, scoring four goals, one of which came in the championship match.

.However, FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o once suggested that he does not want players who are born abroad, like Mbappe, to represent the national team.

What did Eto’o say?

Speaking at the National Day of Diasporas and Africa (JNDA) in France, where he was invited as a guest speaker in March, Eto’o said via SNL24:

"I do not want to have a Kylian Mbappé who was born in Bordeaux in our national team, but to make Kylian Mbappés who were born in our working-class neighborhoods in Cameroon, because there are talents in our territories to be valued."

Eto'o's ideas about football in Cameroon were described as "just one of the ways to reduce these insignificant happenings in Africa."

The former Barcelona striker indirectly stated that more interest should be given to players who hail from a country who represent that same country.
