Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has urged her brother to leave Portugal’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad in Qatar at once and come home after being benched against Switzerland.
Aveiro stated this in a lengthy emotional message on her Instagram page on Thursday.
Recall that Ronaldo was dropped from Portugal’s starting XI by head coach Fernando Santos in the round-of-16 clash against Switzerland, which they won 6-1.
Taking to Instagram, Aveiro admitted that while she was happy that Portugal had won, she couldn’t overlook the disrespect Ronaldo was receiving in his country.
She said, “I am glad Portugal won... (I have seen Portugal win so many times). And even this doesn’t invalidate the smallness of a large part of the Portuguese people. And this is what isn’t right, because they continue to curse, they continue to insist on offense and ingratitude.
“Too sad with what I read and heard—not here in Qatar but in my country, in his country—but really sad, and I wanted it so much.
“I really wanted him [Ronaldo] to come home, leave the national team and sit next to us so we could hug him and say that everything is fine, remind him of what he conquered and what home he came from.
“I really wanted him not to go there anymore; we have suffered enough.”
Ronaldo, 37, will now hope to start for Portugal when they face Morocco in the quarterfinal tie on Saturday.
