Yesterday in an intense showdown at the first leg of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games final qualifiers, Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinched a slender 1-0 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in Abuja on Friday, thanks to a late first-half penalty converted by Rasheedat Ajibade.
This win marks a significant milestone for the Falcons, as it's their first victory against South Africa since their triumph on penalties in the final of the 2018 WAFCON tournament.
The decisive moment came in the 43rd minute when Ajibade coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after Chiwendu Ihezuo was fouled inside the box.
With the second leg set to take place in Pretoria on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Falcons are keen to maintain their advantage and secure at least a draw to progress to the Paris Olympics.
The stakes are high in this tightly contested qualifier, as the winner over the two legs will earn one of the coveted tickets to the prestigious Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Despite their storied history in women's football, the Falcons have faced Olympic absence since their last appearance at Athens 2004, where they reached the quarter-finals. Now, with their sights set on Paris 2024, the Falcons are determined to reclaim their place on the world stage and make their mark once again.
