Following the thrilling encounter yesterday at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Super Eagles assistant coach, Finidi George, attributed the team's victory over Cote d'Ivoire to a combination of discipline and a strategic shift in formation.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Finidi expressed his satisfaction with the players' adherence to instructions in what he described as a highly tactical game against the host nation.
The coach revealed that the team employed a tactical switch in formation, opting to defend more often and execute counter-attacks from the flanks. Recognizing the prowess of the Cote d'Ivoire team with the ball, Finidi explained that a more conservative approach was necessary. "It's a team that is very good on the ball, so we had to sit back a bit, close the spaces, and go on counter-attacks," he elaborated.
Despite the triumph, Finidi emphasized that the team would not let success cloud their focus. Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Guinea Bissau on Monday, he stressed the importance of maintaining composure and continuing to work hard. "We will keep our cool in the next match because nothing has been achieved yet; we go all out again," he affirmed.
Nigeria, currently holding the second position in Group A, is set to face Guinea-Bissau at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan for their third and final Group A match on Monday at 5:00 p.m. local time, according to NAN reports.
