Renowned actress Olivia Hussey, best known for her unforgettable role as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, passed away on Friday at the age of 73.
Her family confirmed the sad news in a touching Instagram statement, describing her as a “remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.”
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951, Hussey moved to London at age seven, where she trained at the prestigious Italia Conti drama school. Her talent quickly propelled her to stardom when, at just 15, she starred opposite Leonard Whiting in Zeffirelli’s Oscar-winning adaptation of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. Her breathtaking performance earned her a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year” and cemented her legacy in cinematic history.
Hussey’s career extended far beyond her iconic role as Juliet. She showcased her versatility in films such as the 1974 horror classic Black Christmas and the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.
In recent years, Hussey and her Romeo and Juliet co-star, Leonard Whiting, made headlines by filing a lawsuit in 2023 against the studio behind the film, alleging child exploitation due to a controversial nude scene.
While the case was ultimately dismissed, Hussey defended the scene in a 2018 interview, emphasizing the professionalism she and Whiting brought to their roles: “We were very aware. We both came from drama schools and took our work very seriously.”
Hussey’s personal life was as rich as her professional one. She married musician David Eisley, with whom she shared three children and a grandchild. Her family remains her lasting legacy, alongside her impactful contributions to film and television.
Fans and colleagues around the world remember Olivia Hussey as a trailblazer whose artistry, elegance, and passion for her craft will never be forgotten.
