Controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, has finally regained his freedom.

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed the news on Tuesday, revealing that the artist had been released from Kuje Prison.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Adeyanju shared, “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”

The release follows a recent ruling by an Abuja court granting Speed Darlington bail after sustained public pressure forced the Nigeria Police Force to formally arraign him.

Darlington’s detention became a heated issue after he petitioned DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau, Abuja. In his petition, the singer urged compliance with a court order that questioned his prolonged detention.

The controversial artist had been arrested following his allegations against Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy, accusing him of an immoral relationship with embattled U.S. rapper and music executive Sean Combs, aka P. Diddy.

However, in a decisive ruling on December 23, 2024, Justice M.S. Liman ordered the police to either charge Darlington in court within 48 hours or release him unconditionally.

After weeks of legal tussles and intense public scrutiny, Speed Darlington is finally a free man.
